Soil and odour: yes
Ground-in grit, body oils, traffic lanes and most food, drink and mud stains come out with extraction. That is the bulk of what makes carpets look old.
Not a wet shampoo that leaves carpets crunchy. Professional hot water extraction that pulls soil, allergens and odour out of the pile, and leaves your carpet dry enough to walk on the same day.
Most of what makes a carpet look tired is not stains. It is fine grit and body oils bonded to the fibre, which flattens the pile and dulls the colour. A domestic vacuum lifts the loose surface layer and nothing more. Dry powders and supermarket shampoos tackle the top of the pile and often leave sticky residue behind, which then attracts soil faster than before.
Hot water extraction, what people usually call steam cleaning, is the method the carpet manufacturers themselves recommend. We pre-vacuum, apply a pre-spray matched to the fibre, agitate it into the pile, let it dwell, then rinse with hot water at pressure while a vacuum recovers the soil and most of the moisture in the same pass. The dirt leaves the building in our tank.
Because we extract hard instead of soaking, carpets are usually touch-dry in two to four hours and fully dry overnight. We bring air movers for the colder, damper months, which matters in Plymouth between November and March.
Pet urine is the hardest thing we deal with, and it is worth being straight about why. Urine soaks through the carpet into the underlay and often the floorboards beneath. Cleaning the carpet surface removes the visible mark and most of the smell, but if the underlay is saturated the odour returns on a warm, humid day because the salts reactivate.
We test the extent with a moisture meter and tell you honestly which of the three situations you are in: surface only, which cleans out completely; through to the underlay, which needs a specific enzyme treatment and gives a very good but not guaranteed result; or saturated subfloor, where replacing the underlay in that area is the only real fix. We would rather lose the job than take your money for a result we know will fail.
Everyday stains are far more straightforward. Coffee, tea, red wine, mud, make-up and grease normally come out. Bleach, dye transfer from rugs or printed paper, burns and some older rust marks are permanent damage to the fibre, not soiling. No cleaner can restore colour that has gone.
Plenty of Plymouth tenancies state that carpets were professionally cleaned at the start of the let, which means the same is expected at the end. A machine clean with a receipt is the simplest way to close that item off, and we routinely combine it with an end of tenancy clean in one visit.
For landlords, a point worth knowing: carpets that are extracted between tenancies last significantly longer than carpets that are only vacuumed, because grit is abrasive and grinds the fibre every time someone walks on it. Cleaning a carpet twice over a five-year tenancy cycle is far cheaper than replacing it.
In commercial settings the problem is never the whole floor. It is the lanes. The route from the door to the lift, the first three metres of entrance carpet, the path between desks and the kitchen: those darken while the rest of the carpet stays reasonable. We can clean traffic lanes and entrance areas on a quarterly cycle and do the full floor annually, which keeps a commercial office looking presentable for a fraction of the cost of a full clean every time.
Stairs deserve a mention of their own. They take the most wear of any carpeted area in a house and they are the slowest to clean properly, because every tread and riser is a separate surface done by hand. Per-step pricing is normal and we will always quote stairs separately instead of hiding them in a room count.
Carpets are priced per room, with a minimum charge for a single small room because the machine setup time is the same either way.
| Job | Guide price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single room | Around £30 to £45 | Minimum charge applies |
| Two to three rooms | Reduced per room | Most common household booking |
| Whole house, 3 bed | Quoted as a package | Usually a half day |
| Stairs and landing | Priced separately | Done tread by tread, by hand |
| Pet odour treatment | Add-on per area | Enzyme treatment, assessed first |
| Stain protector | Add-on per room | Applied after extraction |
These are the Plymouth market ranges we see in 2026. Heavily soiled carpets take longer and are quoted accordingly. We will tell you before we start, never after. See the full Plymouth cleaning price list.

We extract hard rather than soaking, and bring air movers in winter. Touch-dry in two to four hours, fully dry overnight.
Bleach marks, dye transfer, burns and worn-through pile are damage, not dirt. We tell you up front instead of charging you to find out.
Tell us how many rooms, whether stairs are included, and if there are any pet or stain problems. We will give you a per-room price and a realistic view of the result.
Many customers combine two or three services into a single visit: just mention it when you ask for your quote.
Covering the whole of Plymouth plus the surrounding towns and villages.
Expect roughly £30 to £45 for a single room in Plymouth, with a lower rate per room when several rooms are done in the same visit, and stairs quoted separately because they are cleaned tread by tread. A three-bed house including stairs is usually a half-day job quoted as a package.
Two to four hours to touch-dry and fully dry overnight in normal conditions. We extract instead of soak, and we bring air movers in the colder months when Plymouth humidity slows drying. Keeping a window ajar and the heating on low helps.
Usually a great deal of it, sometimes all of it. It depends how far the urine travelled. Surface contamination cleans out completely. If it has reached the underlay we treat it with enzymes and get a very good result, but we cannot guarantee it. If the subfloor is saturated the underlay needs replacing, and we will tell you that rather than selling you a clean that will smell again in a fortnight.
Clearing small items, rugs and anything breakable helps a lot. We will move sofas, beds and tables where it is safe for two people to do so, and clean around anything heavy or fitted. Pads go under furniture legs when they go back, so damp pile does not pick up stain from wood or metal.
Yes. We use professional products at the correct dilution, rinse with hot water and extract the residue instead of leaving it in the pile. Keep children and animals off the carpet until it is dry, mainly so nobody slips and so the pile is not flattened while damp.
Yes, with the right approach. Wool needs a lower pH product and lower temperature than synthetic fibre, and we fibre-test before we start. Delicate, antique or silk rugs are better taken off site to a specialist, and we will say so instead of risk them.
